Before you start making a plan first go through this checklist to see what survival skills your student has and what skills they need to practice. Together you will look at categories such as cooking, shopping, personal hygiene, and academic knowledge. From this assessment you can use this guide to start practicing and mastering different skills to help your student become independent.


Parent Tips for Transition Planning

This is a great guide for you to learn about transition planning and why it is important. It answers great questions such as why are students involved in transition planning? or how can I be sure that the IEP meets my child's transition needs? It also gives you questions to ask at the IEP meeting to help your students transition portion of their IEP.

Vocational Rehabilitation

When you go to the Vocational Rehabilitation link on this page it will take you directly to the parent page. Voc Rehab is a great resource for you an your student. Once your student has reached the age of 16 there is a form to fill out to get the process started. Voc Rehab can help your student find employment, apply for college, look for housing, and many many other thing


College Planning Timeline

This page is part of I Have a Plan Iowa or I-HAPI. Many students take I-HAPI at school during their 8th- 12th grade years. I-HAPI helps students figure out their future plans by having students fill out an assessment. The link that is provided here from I-HAPI will help with college planning starting with the 7th grade year for your student. This page will help you and your student transition from high school to college.


Accommodations

On this page you and your student can explore different accommodations that can be used in college. I would highly recommend that you and your student view this to help decide what type of post secondary education is right for them. Also to help get your high school student work towards only having accommodations that can be used at the college level.

The following sites contain information about financial aid and how to get loans, grants, and scholarships. If your student is planning on attending a post secondary institution I would start planning now for your sources of financial aid.
